Description

This painting pays tribute to the fruit fly, drosophila melanogaster, one of the workhorses of biological research. This little insect has allowed scientists to make many important discoveries.

This particular image is based on a photo of mitosis, or cell division, in drosophila embryos. It was made using a batik technique - I drew the outline of the dividing cells using a resist, and then painted over it with a combination of ink and water on Yupo.

Yupo is a non-absorbent "paper" made of 100% polypropylene, so instead of sinking into the surface, the ink stays on top and forms amazing patterns as it dries. After it dried, I removed the resist to reveal the white of the paper.

In a mixture of black and blue ink and water on yupo - this one has a standard size 16 x 20 inch white mat and backing board for easier framing. Will look great in a simple black or silver frame.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN ORIGINAL INK PAINTING, NOT A PRINT. THERE IS ONLY ONE

I bought two of these lovely ties to match almost all dress clothes my husband wears. They look great on him.

My husband, the neuroscientist, is no fan of ties. But he really enjoys wearing these two.
