This "Reversible Patched Pojagi Runner" was inspired by a combination of four of my muses...

1) Pojagi, (the ancient art of Korean patchwork).
2) Boro, (very old patched and mended cloth work from Japan).
3) Utilitarian quilts from the Depression era.
4) Clean, modern esthetics.

Beautiful as a table runner, wall hanging or window panel, this piece is made up of multiple, single layer pieces of a gorgeous deep blue/black shot cotton, (wonderful cotton fabrics that have been woven with different color weft and warp threads, producing a rich depth of color which can shift and change depending on how the light hits the grain of the fabric. (Refer to last photo to see this effect more clearly).

All sections were sewn together Pojagi style. In Pojagi, the patchwork seams are neatly folded and stitched down, so both sides may be displayed. This method is labor intensive, but the end result is worth the time. (Refer to 2nd and 3rd photos to see both sides of runner.)

Patches of shot cotton and shirting fabric were then stitched on both sides, creating a visual dance... not only are the patches on the facing side a design element, but so are the the patches on the opposite side, as their stitching shows through as well.

Created this way, the piece not only works fabulously as a runner and a wall hanging, but also hung where both sides may be viewed, such as in a window, from a ceiling, or in between a doorway. (Suggested methods for hanging include metal hanging hook clips which are available at Ikea - refer to 4th photo to see, as well as hangers, pins or tacks).

Please Note: While I try my very best to accurately represent the colors in my photographs, please keep in mind that colors may vary from monitor to monitor, sometimes appearing a bit brighter, and sometimes appearing a bit more washed out then they actually are.

In this work, the main background is a dark, black infused blue. Three different fabrics were used for the patches, including 2 shot cotton fabrics; one a solid made up of teal blue threads intersecting with brown threads, and the other a striped shot cotton, made up of white and blue threads intersecting with an aqua thread. The third fabric is a soft, woven shirting fabric; blue with very thin multi-colored strips running through.
