This piece of fabric is from a vintage obi (sash) that was worn with a japanese kimono during the late Showa era (1947 - 1989).

It is a beautiful, abstract and richly textured pattern achieved by different finishes and shades of gold coated silk yarn interwoven with a darkened orange matte silk yarn.

It is very stiff fabric with an entirely woven pattern.

It has a dry, stiff silken feel.

Condition: Vintage, barely used then carefully washed only once or twice, with the occasional fold lines which do not detract or misshape, well-kept for decades.

Length: 45cm or 17.7 inches panel - more panels available. Price is per panel
Width: 30.5cm or 10.75 inches

This has been cut from the original obi.

This has backing fabric (pure, stiff mid and slightly dull-orange silk - different to the background silk in the front panel) sewn to it along the selvage edges. The fabric width described is the width after being attached to the backing - so, unpicked from the backing, the fabric is actually a little wider than 30.5cm.

To countries outside Australia, Australia Post charges anything over 20mm thick at parcel rates and it is $14.90 (including packaging) for parcels weighing 0 to 500g! which is why the postage price per panel is so high.

One panel will fit into an envelope (less than 20mm) and can be sent at "letter rates" which start at $8 (including packaging) for envelopes 50g to 250g.
