Offering a small, primitive, zoomorphic, matte black pottery GUARDIAN FIGURE with incised geometric detailing. Standing on 4 legs, the front legs with incised toes, this amazing figure features a man's face with a lizard's body.

There are a couple of places, along an edge or under the feet, where the red clay underlay is barely visible. This intriguing piece measures 6 1/4 inches long from head to tail X 2 5/8 inches wide at the widest point X 3 3/4 inches high at the highest point. It is relatively heavy for its size, weighing in at 3/4 of a pound. There are no visible markings to indicate the artist or culture/country of origin, however, the figure appears to be old and of Mexican descent - this is undoubtedly from a region where lizards are a predominant species...

This is a particularly appealing guardian figure. It's easy to see why this ancient style of pottery has become such a prized and highly sought after art form.
