Newsboy Cap / Shelby Cap digital pattern, and instructional video on YouTube.
Digital file type(s): 1 PDF
Digital Newsboy / Shelby Cap pattern. I have another listing for the physical copy, and offer a pattern for the same style cap in Kid sizes.
This is a standard style pattern meant to be sewn on a machine. It is possible to sew by hand it just doesn't have all the holes marked like in more hobbyist style leather working patterns. However, this pattern will give more professional looking results. It is also compatible with leather and Fabric.
Go to TonyAllenBernier.com or YouTube for the instructional video.
You may also choose whether or not you would like to add a 20 yard roll of sew through double sided basting tape (1/4" wide).
Printed on glossy card stock. All eight panels for the crown of the cap are represented in the pattern for ease of use. Since the left and right sides of the cap are identical you may chose to cut out four of the eight in one size and the other four in another size.
It takes about 4 to 5 square feet for the outer shell and the same amount of lining material for the inside. If you're using a material with a pattern you may need to up the footage a little.
A thicker fabric works well, similar to upholstery grade.
If you go with leather a 1 to 2oz works great, preferably something floppy.
The pattern covers the basic small, medium, and large sizes.
The largest line on the pattern makes about a 7-1/4 to 7-3/8 US size cap (around 23-3/8"
to 23-3/4" head circumference). The middle line makes about a 6-7/8 to 7 US size cap (about
22-1/8"to 22-1/2"head circumference). The smallest pattern line will make a cap around a 6-1/4
to 6-1/2 Us size cap (about 20-1/2" to 20-7/8" head circumference).
Depending on the material used, and the makers techniques. Any size could be brought down by
stretching the elastic sweatband in the back of the cap to make a more one-size-fits-all style.
See my YouTube video for more instruction. Tony Allen Bernier on Youtube.
I also sell the plastic brim inserts, sweatband material, and basting tape.
I started to sew the fold in the back when I do a one size fits all, After the sweatband is in and folded to the inside I put a line of stitches about 3/8" up across the back while I stretch that section out, it helps the cap look cleaner when you have the excess material from the bunching. I only do that on the one size fits all caps that have that style in the back. (see example picture of said seam I did on one of my newsboy caps)

My husband had bought a cap in Galveston similar to this one. We now live in New Zealand and he left his cap behind on a trip we took recently. I was looking for a pattern for this particular cap when I found Tony's video on Youtube. I watched the entire video, and then followed the link to purchase the online pattern. The pattern downloaded easily and printed perfectly. As I made the cap I re-watched the video, one step at a time, which made the whole process very simple. I'm very pleased with the finished cap.
This Pattern is beautiful and exact what I looked for. I made 3 Caps for my Hasband and Son, they really like those.
Everything was detailed beyond belief and when I had a question about which side the pattern was for (the right or wrong side) he responded quickly to help me move forward. (it’s for the right side btw). Great pattern, great seller, great detailed tutorial on YouTube.
If you have some sewing experience, this cap is wonderful to sew. It took me maybe an hour in total, if at all. I'm totally happy with the cut. The cap fits really well and I like it great. I'm going to do a few more for myself and my family. Thank you 😘
