OFFERED PAIRED WITH THE PAINTING "Lighting Strike at Square Butte", which is listed just prior to this one.)
$100 for the pair. Let me know and I will set the listing so you can purchase both at that single price.

The spring (late winter) weather of 2006 was especially turbulent - which meant lots of interesting clouds and movement across the sky. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time to watch a massive storm cloud pass over Square Butte (near the small community also known as Square Butte in central Montana.)

Like many of my small studies, this one was done in semi-dry washes of oil paint that allowed each bristle of the brush to make and show it's own distinct mark. In this work those marks add to the feeling of strong winds pushing the cloud and everything else in its path.
The tree trunks/branches were created by pulling the tip of a paint palette knife through the still wet paint. Working this way requires a certain amount of confidence in placing marks exactly as I envision them -- there is no second chance as the counter brush stroke would be broken and although it could be reestablished, it would not be exactly as it initially appeared.

The small size of this work limited detail, which suited my primary aim which was to portray the cloud mass overpowering and obliterating the view of Square Butte.

The first photo posted is the entire work and shows it close to actual size. The detail photos show specific areas larger than actual size.

This work is a companion to two other paintings you can see in my shop:
"Road to Square Butte" (which is now sold and can be seen in the Sold Listings in my shop)
and
"Lightning Strike at Square Butte" which is still available. If you are interested in purchasing the two remaining paintings as a pair, please convo or email me for a special group pricing.
