It has been estimated that about a third of all sheep breeds are in danger of becoming extinct due to the emphasis on commercial fiber production.

Many coloured sheep breeds are becoming more and more rare with many breeds becoming vulnerable as their numbers plummet.

Please help to support those farmers that are conserving genetic diversity of our sheep by growing coloured and endangered breeds.

This Swaledale yarn was handspun with love on my vintage Ashford spinning wheel, and then gently washed using organic soap.

Consider this yarn for projects that need to stand up to the weather and knocking about: possibly outerwear, definately rugs, perhaps a bag, or as part of a basketry project.

The yarn has not been dyed, the gorgeous gray colour is completely natural.

This bulky yarn will knit up quickly on thick needles. As it has quite a crisp handle, I would not recommend it for next-to-the-skin wear, but it would be perfect for items that need to stand up to a lot of wear or for artworks, basketry or anything that you want to last.

"The Swaledale is a very hardy British mountain breed, well adapted to the harsh environment of the Yorkshire moors, the Pennine Hills, and the Lake District where it thrives. Swaledales have dark faces with light grey noses Their legs are mottled dark gray. Their faces and legs are free from wool, and both sexes have horns" - In Sheep's Clothing - A Handspinner's Guide to Wool
