This is an authentic blouse worn by the women of Tehuantepec/Juchitan Oaxaca.
As a strong matriarchal society the women are very social, attending many parties called ‘Velas’ and changing out their elaborate gala outfits for new ones. It’s fortunate for you - as some of the more elaborate and older styles are being sold as collector items.
The woman from this area are very majestic in appearance as you can imagine.
The sizing generally accommodates small short waisted women - although some of the women are very round and some are even tall but they all love to wear these blouses very tight. They can be adjusted by taking in the sides of the blouse or letting them out (as is the case here) as it is a simple straight seam and can be lengthened by added crochet to the bottom or another piece of cloth. Also they can be opened and made into hangings, pillows, etc.
Very fine chain stitching done on an antique treadle sewing machine and is a very laborious technique requiring great skill. Probably pre-80's as the work in superfino.
Width:22" (with 3"inches inside if you want to make it bigger)
Length: 20.5"
This blouse/huipil can be adjusted larger r by letting out side seams
The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo had a large collection of these blouses and wore them daily with long flouncy skirts. And for GALA matching skirts (see illustration )
