birdloft original design
island barn moonwater table

For kitchen or dining, home or cabin, a table of reclaimed old growth Douglas fir from a working island farm in the north Puget Sound. Mid century modern three-prong hairpin legs.

Tabletop is built from 11 salvaged barn boards jointed and glued into a single surface. Pale blue paint is original to the boards, like moonlight on water.

Just as a breeze will lift water into ripples and give movement to moonlight shining on its surface, for the table, the passing of time and the wear of work on the farm have lifted away paint, revealing the movement and figure in the wood.

The blue moonwater down the middle of the tabletop serves as a well-worn bridge to fill with bowls and plates brimming over with food.

The tabletop is supported by a biscuit-jointed apron and frame of solid eastern tulipwood, a hardwood and member of the poplar family.

The top attaches to the frame with s-fasteners to allow the wood to move, so it can swell and contract with seasonal changes in humidity and temperature. The table should endure comfortably for many years, maybe more than a hundred.

The tulipwood apron has been tinted with a wash of grey gouache with faint blues and yellow-oranges to echo the tabletop. Tabletop, apron and frame have been sealed with beeswax.

Legs are raw steel coated with clear matte enamel.

Table is 71L x 40W x 30H. Seats six to eight people. This is the only dining table that will be made from the barn. And the old barn is gone. The table carries on.
