Natural Wood Bullroarer *Birch* for New Beginnings!

This is a beautiful bullroarer, fashioned from a "plank" I sawed from a branch of a Birch tree that had to be removed before it started interfering with the electricity cables. I never cut wood especially for crafting, but always make use of what has to be removed for reasons of tree health, vehicular or pedestrian access or habitat management.Bullroarers are whirled round on the end of a length of cord and as they twist through the air they create a sound quite unlike anything else; an atmospheric hum that seems to resonate with the very bones of Mother Earth and can be varied with the speed of the swing as well as the length of the cord. In magic, they are used to call the spirits of the ancestors or local guardians, or to keep away any malevolent entities. Although most commonly associated with straightforward communication and the Australian aboriginal people, artifacts like this have been found connected to many primitive cultures throughout the world and are increasingly being used to create sacred space by modern witches and pagans of all kinds.

This particular bullroarer is quite long and narrow, but cut fairly thick, so it still has plenty of weight to affect a proper swing. I've rounded the tip and slightly shaped the other end, and the surface of the wood is silky smooth to the touch. The wood shows a variety of subtle colouring, with many shades of honey beige and a small knot visible from both sides. Birch is known for its cleansing and purifying properties and has always been used to rid an area of unwanted or malicious entities, so it's perfect for clearing your space for ritual.

This bullroarer comes with about three feet of waxed cotton cord, attached with a knot that won't twist loose (especially important if you want to avoid the hazard of high-speed flying missiles, or having to try to find it once it's flown into the surrounding undergrowth!) I use waxed cotton cord because unlike most other types of cord or string it is braided, not twisted. Twisted cord will unravel over time from the constant twisting of the wooden blade in the air, which has a weakening effect on the cord as well as looking unsightly. However, even this type of braided cord will wear out eventually, and no knot is infallible, so please check it at regular intervals and replace it if neccessary.

As usual, all the work was done the traditional way by hand, with no help from power tools of any kind. Both the cord and the oiled finish are completely free of animal products and there are no metal parts.

I can make bullroarers from any wood I have that's suitable, either larger or smaller than this one, a slightly different shape, or with runes or other symbols burnt into the wood. I can also add a bead or toggle handle to the end of the cord to ensure it doesn't cut into your fingers during particularly energetic swinging and make it easier to hang on to. Just drop me a convo if you'd like one custom made to your own specifications, the only criterion for bullroarers is that the piece of wood be fairly thin and longer than it is wide.

Birch is traditionally used for cleansing rites and driving out evil spirits. It is useful for matters concerning protection and healing, but its great strength is in rituals to do with birth, rebirth and renewal, or any kind of new beginning. It can be used in exorcism.

Size: About seven inches long, an inch and a quarter wide and about five sixteenths of an inch thick.
179mm x 32mm x 8mm.

It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.

Please exercise common sense whilst using this bullroarer... if you bash it against people or animals it will hurt, and if you bash it against things like walls, ceilings, furniture or trees then something's likely to get damaged. It's not a toy, but a serious tool for your magical practices, and is not designed to be used by children or idiots. :-)
