The White House Cookbook is so much fun to read, that I could look at it for hours! Times sure have changed since this book was published. This was THE main book in the house, during its time! It covered everything......"Seasonable Fruits", cooking and canning, recipes, AND what do do if you get sick, what to eat to stay well, how to get stains out, recipes for cooking up poultices and other medicinal mixtures. *********(By the way, I am sure the White House would no longer recommend "camphorated tincture of opium - 4 ounces" to cure your cough!)*********

"A comprehensive encyclopedia of information for the home, containing cooking, toilet and household recipes, menus, table etiquette, care of the sick, health suggestions, facts worth knowing".

The White House caterer and Stewart of the White House, Hugo Ziemann worked quite hard to combine all of the recipes and information in this cook book. It is full of amazing advice of the time period, how to use manners, how throw a dinner party (for anyone, even "of a meager income"). Mr. Ziemann had the assistance of Mrs. Fanny Lemira Camp Gilette in completing this book.

This book is fragile and the back binding is loose (see last picture). The information and pictures of Presidential Rooms in the White House, and photographs of the First Ladies in this book are priceless. Original copyright of this book is 1887, with several subsequent copyrights, ending with the last one in 1929. Many newer editions are available, but this is one of the earlier editions. *This one is copyright 1903, published by Saafield Publishing Company.*
