History of the Magic Lantern Slides:

“The Father of Film” was also called the magic lantern. This process was invented in Europe in the 1650s. Images were hand painted onto glass and projected using candle or lantern light onto walls, cloth or other surfaces.

Later, lantern slides were made by taking a photograph and printing the image onto transparent glass which were then sandwiched together with another piece of glass to protect the emulsion. Magic lanterns were used by itinerant showmen. Professors used them for lectures, and churches used them to tell Biblical stories. Magic lanterns were also used in theaters and homes. In theater lantern shows the showman and musician provided the sound assisted by the audience who clapped, shouted, or enhanced the presentation with horns and tambourines. The era of the magic lantern ended in the early 1930’s because of the development of motion picture film.
