:: The Lady Pirate of Baja ::

A wonderfully colored handmade glass bead on my handcrafted brass links, this collar-length necklace has a rustic appeal that makes it a lot of fun to wear!

I'm really a kid at heart, and love big, fun escapist movies with lots of eye candy, like Pirates of the Carribean. After seeing the latest installment in the series, I came away wanting to live like a pirate, dress like a pirate, be everything about pirates except perhaps smell like one, and here I had these absolutely romantic Basha Beads that just seemed to embody that adventurous life. But pirates in the desert? That's a bit of a stretch...unless you go to Baja! So, long story short (for me, anyhow), I was inspired to create something that evoked that rustic sense of adventurousness, and this lovely trinket was the result.

Barbara, creator of the one-of-a-kind Basha Beads, made this one just for my work. Shaped like an irregular, soft diamond, it glows from within with swirls of shimmering aquas, greens, silvers, and blue-violet. The smoky glass matrix and eroded, bubbled surface give it the look of something out of antiquity, and it is very inviting to the touch.

I chose brass to go with the bead, because silver is so beastly expensive right now and honestly I think brass looks better. True, brass is considered a "base" metal, but I love all materials and to me it has its own unique beauty. I made the bail for the bead out of heavy gauge wire, hammered on desert rock for an ancient texture. At the base, two hammered brass washers anchor the bead, and an irregular wrap of thinner wire adds interest to the top.

The chain itself was a labor of love, but it was the perfect solution for this piece. It's a series of twisted links very much like what you would see on a rosary. Simple, primitive-looking brass beads from Ethiopia alternate large and small on the links. If you look closely you'll see that I was very careful about aligning and chaining the links so that they weren't skewed or twisted, which will help prevent the chain from kinking up. The closure is a nice, piratey hook (naturally) and has had the same treatment as the bead's bail. Finally, I oxidized all of the brasswork and burnished it to a glow.

This is a very sturdy necklace, great for everyday wear, and lovely with a t-shirt...or a plunging neckline!

A treasure fit for a pirate queen!

Size: 10 3/4" from the hook to the base of the pendant. The total length of the chain is 18". The bead with brass bail is 2 1/4" x 1" x 5/8".

Care: Wash regularly with soap and water to prevent oxidation. Polish with a silver polishing cloth to brighten the high spots. Keeping it clean will help avoid "green skin". If you wear it with clean, dry skin without excess oils or lotion, that will help also.

The Lady Pirate of Baja will arrive giftwrapped in a reusable, hand decorated box, along with a handwritten descriptive label.
