This ceramic Budweiser collector stein by Anheuser-Busch, Inc. is dated 1989. It shows the beautiful Clydesdale horses traveling down a snowy country path.

Snow capped peaks of a farmhouse beneath the midnight blue sky set the backdrop for the regal Budweiser Clydesdale's trotting down the country lane. The Clydesdale’s, decked with jingle bells, are pulling the cart filled with Christmas greenery. Both drivers are clad in bright red jackets and red & white scarves and hats. Even the Dalmatian dog is set for the holidays with a gold collar. One can certainly envision the amount of snowfall by looking at the snow-covered tree and fence they are passing.

A rope trim with a deep maroon border outlined with golden yellow, frame this serene country scene. The stein is quite colorful using shades of white, brown, red, green, blue and yellow which are set on a stoneware light gray stein. The handle is the same deep maroon, almost brown color, that frames the scene. It has the Anheuser-Busch logo at the top.

The underside of the mug reads, “Handcrafted expressly for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. 1989 Collector’s Series”
‘The tradition of the World Famous Budweiser Clydesdales continues. This special edition stein shows the hitch on a winter’s evening.’

It measures 6 1/2" tall (16.5cm) and has a 4” (10.2cm) base and a 3” mouth (7.6cm).

The stein is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing.

The history of the Budweiser Clydesdale’s is quite interesting. August A. Busch, Jr. gave the original team, pulling a red, white, & gold beer wagon, to his father as a gift on April 7, 1933 in celebration of the repeal of Prohibition. The hitch of horses then carried the first case of post-Prohibition beer from the St. Louis brewery down Pestalozzi Street in St. Louis.

August Anheuser Busch, Sr. immediately recognized the advertising potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon and had the Clydesdale team sent by rail to New York City. They then picked up two cases of beer from Newark Airport, NJ and presented it to Al Smith, former governor of NY. The horses continued “on tour” throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic states, even stopping off at the White House to deliver a case of beer to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

To date Anheuser-Busch owns approximately 250 Clydesdale horses that are housed at several locations throughout the United States. There are a total of six Clydesdale horse hitches; 5 travel around the United States and 1 stays a their home – corporate headquarters for the Anheuser-Busch Brewery compound in St. Louis, Missouri.

This stein is a cross collecting dream. It would appeal to beer lovers, for sure (especially Budweiser drinkers!) – but also those that collect beer or Budweiser items, horse collectors, stein collectors, holiday collections & those who love country scenes. The holidays are fast approaching and this stein would make a wonderful gift.
