Bewilder and Pine presents "The Hermitage", a handmade and hand-painted miniature, HO scale building that is meant to be a charmingly simple and austere reminder of the necessity for solitude and for inner peace within your daily life.

Fashioned after the old stone houses, farms and chapels found in French villages, this little hermitage is textured and painted in traditional stone colors and "weathered".

This design is inspired by the little Chapel at Les Baux-de-Provence, an old fortified village sits on top of a high rock spur. The village scores plenty of tour caoches but on the day of my visit the ruins carved from the rock above the village were nearly deserted despite the crowds in the newer part of the village. Amidst the ruins was this small chapel that dates from the 1th century.

My first time in Europe, now more years ago than I care to admit, I was awestruck by so many things that I saw . I was taken with the way so much of the architecture seems to have simply sprung up from the Earth. Things seem far less "built" and far more organic.

This chapel can be used as a personal reminder upon an altar or a mantle or, since it has been intentionally constructed at HO scale size, it can be used with other buildings in the modeling of HO scale railroads and scenes of country life.

“I lived in solitude in the country and noticed how the monotony of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind”
Albert Einstein

Snapshots of Les Baux-de-Provence

During the Middle Ages it became the seat of a powerful feudal lordship that controlled 79 towns and villages in the vicinity

Les Baux was later joined, along with Provence, to the French crown under the governance of the Manville family. It became a centre for Protestantism and its unsuccessful revolt against the crown led Cardinal Richelieu in 1632 to order that the town's castle and its walls should be demolished.

n 1822 the mineral bauxite was discovered near Les Baux by the geologist Pierre Berthier. It was mined extensively in the area, but by the end of the 20th century had been completely worked out;

Les Baux is now given over entirely to the tourist trade, relying on a reputation as one of the most picturesque villages in France. Its population of 22 in the old village is a fraction of its once peak population of over 4,000, and many of its buildings are picturesque ruins.
