Designer: Joseph Low

"Four Metaphysical Poets: Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, Crashaw"
by Joan Bennett.
Vintage Books, 1953
4.25" x 7.25"

A nice copy with only minor shelf wear to the cover. Small notations on the title page and two small circular rubber stamps in red ink. Light overall toning. Otherwise clean throughout.

About Joseph Low:
Joe Low (1911-2007) studies at the Art Students League in New York under German expressionist artist George Grosz might account for his somewhat brutal and absurdist style, which was based partly on medieval stone and wood carvings. His illustration work spans the graphic gamut, but rests primarily within the realm of magazine, book, and record covers. In the 1940s he acquired a hand press, and started his own private printing shop in Newtown CT in 1960. As proprietor of the Even Hill Press, he designed, illustrated, and typeset limited run editions of poetry and short stories. He closed this shop in 1969. Starting in the late 50s he began illustrating children's books, which was a large part of his body of late life work. Low also illustrated dozens of covers for The New Yorker through his career, beginning in the 1940s with the last appearing in 1980. Low was a 1981 recipient of Coldecott honours for his illustrations for the book "Mice Twice."
