Handmade

Tiny, cucumber-type fruit shaped like fairy watermelons! Cucamelons are crunchy with a bright lemony, almost pickled cucumber taste, they grow on tall, 6-10 foot vines covered with lovely little leaves. Profusions of smooth-skinned 1-2 inch little green and white speckled mouse melons take hold quickly and are easily gathered from the ground where they fall when most ripe.

Delicious added to salsa’s, salads, as well as pickled or simply eaten raw as a juicy snack. The ornamental vines have tiny leaves and flowers making the Sour Gherkin terrific for containers, hanging baskets and the cottage garden. Harvest from summer to fall.

Also known as the Mexican Sour Gherkin, Sandita or Sandia de Raton (little watermelon or little mouse melon) are unusual little fruits native to Mexico and Central America where they have been a dietary staple since pre-Columbian times.

A heat loving tropical plant that is most productive in hot weather or a greenhouse setting, but does great anywhere cucumbers can be grown. Start the seeds indoors and treat as you would a conventional cucumber seedling. Very unique and fun for kids and adults alike! Huge yields. Melothria scabra. 75 days.

~ planting ~

When to Sow Outside: 1 to 2 weeks after your average last frost date, and when soil temperature is 70°–90°F.

When to Start Inside: Recommended for short-season areas. 2 to 4 weeks before transplanting within 2 weeks after your average last frost date. Considering sowing into biodegradable pots that can be directly planted in the ground as roots are sensitive to disturbance.

Days to Emerge: 4–13 days
Seed Depth: ¼"
Seed Spacing: 2–3 seeds per mound
Row Spacing: 4'
Hardiness: Frost-sensitive annual

~ harvesting ~

Pick fruits when about the size of a grape or under 1" long for best flavor. As fruits mature, sourness increases and they can get increasingly seedy. Cut the stem rather than pulling at the fruit. Dunk the harvest in cold water to disperse field heat - this increases quality and life of picked fruit.

~ additional instructions ~
- all seeds are heirloom, open-pollinated, organic & non-gmo (unless noted otherwise).
- detailed instructions are included with every seed package.
- inquire for discounts available on bulk quantities.
