Lapis Lazuli is a gemstone which has been known from antiquity. It is even mentioned a number of times in the Bible (under one of its older names, "sapphire," which of course has been given to another stone in more recent times). It was especially valued because it could be used to produce ultramarine, the finest of blue pigments. The stone consists of a mixture minerals. The blue components are largely lazurite, sodalite and hayunite; the white is calcite, and the golden specks are pyrite. Though it has been found in a number of places, Afghanistan still produces the best material. Its color is the most pure and it has the highest concentration of blue. This piece has an intensely blue center, with a ring of golden pyrite speckles showing around the edge. It measures 9/10 inches (2.3 cm) in diameter.
The item will be mailed in a priority mail flat-rate box to buyers in the US. Canadian shipping is through US first class international mail. The chain is not included.
