At the dawn of the year 1899, the world was comparatively at peace. The Treaty between America and Spain had been signed. A few minor disturbances were occurring in South and Central America, Europe, Asia and Africa, all revolutionary attempts to topple existing governments. The value of the Czar of Russia's proposal for a comparative disarmament of great nations is yet to be determined.
In the United States, sugar, wheat, tobacco and cotton were the leading crop industries.
Money in circulation reached 1.9 trillion dollars, the public debt was 1.4 trillion.
Illinois had the most railroads at 10,786 miles, Alaska had 20 miles.
It cost 5 cents to send a letter in the States, 5 cents international.
The President's salary was $50,000 a year, the Vice President, a distant $8,000 a year.
There were 22 million school aged children; 97,000 paupers; nearly 2 million pensioners and 60,000 inmates in jails.
The most predominant religion in the United States was Roman Catholic with more than 8 million people practicing Catholicism.
Germany was the largest beer producer in the world, Great Britain produced the most coal, Russia produced the most rye, Brazil produced the most coffee.
How much had our world changed in the last 100 plus years?
