NOTE on Overseas Shipping: As everyone is aware, postal service has slowed down since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Postal staff are saying it is due to COVID-19 issues, staff shortages, and canceled flights overseas which general carry mail. Happily my European customers have received their book orders in great conditions after a longer-than-usual wait. Orders to Europe are First Class International Package mail. Know that the books are "in transit." Until COVID-19 eases up, I might suggest that new orders for Europe go through Jenni Vanhanen in Finland. She is ordering by multiple cases. Please contact me directly if you have any questions about this. It is a challenging time for all.

This is the fruit of my love and labor of the past 8-9 years! This is your opportunity to order a copy of Rya Rugs--Design and Make Your Own by me, Melinda Purcell Byrd.

The reason for a special Non-USA Listing is because for USA orders, we are fortunate to have a Book Rate postal choice which is very good for a 3 lbs book, but the postal rate does not exist for international orders, so I must list other options for shipping outside of the USA. International First class seems to be the least expensive, and has been good for my non-USA orders in the past.

If you live outside the USA and you know a fiber arts shop that sells books or a books shop that might want to order a full carton of 13 softbound books, tell them I can ship to a store at wholesale price and ship via DHL for better-than-post office price. Then you can buy from that bookstore and bring along 12 of your friends to do the same. Then everyone is happy!

Since summer, Hardbound Books are available in Finland! Contact Jenni Vanhanen at I'm looking for more book outlets in Europe to make them more available to all.

Please ask for personalized Etsy listings if you will be buying more than one book or buying a book in addition to other items.

I printed 500 hardbound books and have sold about 400, so there are plenty for send-immediately sales; no waiting.
I now have them also printed in softbound cover. You have a choice. Both are high quality.

This colorful book is 298 pages with approx. 500 color professional photographs. It has a matte finish hardbound or softbound cover. It has history, personal stories by experienced rya rug makers from across the USA and the Nordic countries, but most of all it will share all the tips and tricks of how to make a rya rug and how to design your own. It will be appreciated by both novice and advanced rya rug makers. (I write assuming you have never made one, but I guide you towards advanced steps as well.)

I would love to sign your copy and add a personal note if you request.

Customs and VAT may be charged according to where you live.

More Information:

Learn the art of designing and making a rya rug in Nordic traditions without a loom or special equipment. In the days of the Vikings, ryas were woven on looms with a wool pile that gave warm insulation in the cold winters as warm cloaks on a freezing sea, sleigh blankets, and as bed coverings. Today, you can make authentic, heirloom-quality rya rugs without a loom so you can enjoy them as art on the walls, floors, beds, and more.

After World War II, Nordic countries marketed their signature crafts around the world. They wove heavy backings, spun hearty and colorful rya yarns, and designed kits easily made by beginners. These industries thrived throughout the midcentury modern era, but suddenly supplies became difficult to find when fashions trends changed. From the late 1970s to very recent times, not only supplies, but experienced teachers were very hard to find.

Melinda Purcell Byrd was born into a rya rug family. Her grandparents, Bill and Angelina Lundgren from Northborough, Massachusetts began importing Swedish rya supplies the year she was born. They established a thriving business by providing kits and custom designs in rya across the United States. Melinda designed and made her first when she was 11 years old. After college, she worked with her grandparents as designer, teacher, and business manager becoming proficient in all things rya. Yet without the benefit of the internet (1980) Lundgren Rya, along with dozens of other suppliers in the USA and Europe closed their doors.

Thirty years later Byrd has used the internet to connect the rya dots and provides a resource for currently available supplies as well as how to use them. History of how this art form began, thrived, and was nearly lost is shared. She demystifies the designing process and gives detailed examples of various designing techniques for both the right-brained and left-brained thinkers. You’ll find the personal story profiles of other rya pilgrims, innovators, and visionaries to inspire you. Full of colorful illustrative photos by award-winning photographer, Ken Koons, this book will move you to join the rya rug revival!

Be among the very first to receive a copy of this unique and long-awaited book.

Back Cover of the Book Reads:

Learn this colorful and rich Nordic handicraft dating back to the days of the Vikings from someone who has done it all of her life.

With easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions, you will be guided through all the steps you need not only to get started, but to the completion of the rya rug YOU design. Your rya wall-hanging, rug, or pillow will be considered a family heirloom for generations.

The author has tracked down the best rya yarn and backings from the mills, manufacturers, and shops of the world. She has demystified the art to make it easy for anyone who chooses to make it their own. She offers both left-brained and right brained approaches to designing as well as calculating how much yarn you will need for your projects. She will teach you—as her grandparents taught her—how to “paint with a needle.”

Learn the process from Melinda Purcell Byrd as though she were looking over your shoulder and pointing the way to the next step.

The book is generously illustrated with helpful and beautiful photographs throughout. No loom or special equipment is required.

My kit came yesterday. I bought it on Wednesday late evening and it arrived on Monday! That's incredibly fast. I had several back-and-forth conversations with Melinda before purchasing it and she put up with even my most complicated and obsessive emails! I wanted to amend the kit with a third strand of Prydvevgarn and I was pleased to see that such an addition didn't really increase the cost of the kit by all that much. Everything was packed extremely well and organized. Because the chart for knotting the pattern is small, Melinda even blew up sections of it to make it easier to read. In my book, that sets her customer service standards so very high. The Norwegian backing is wonderful. Strong and sturdy but it actually feels soft in my hands. And the wool is glorious. I'm hoping this is the first of many ryas!
