The Elegant Tern feeds by plunge-diving for fish, almost invariably from the sea, like most Thalasseus terns. It usually dives directly, and not from the "stepped-hover" favored by the Arctic Tern. The offering of fish by the male to the female is part of the courtship display. After an unsuccessful attempt to catch a small fish, the Elegant will shake the water off it's feathers in mid flight. This happens in a split second and to the naked eye, it is almost impossible to see that the tern actually turns it's head completely upside down. With the help of my digital camera and a very fast shutter speed, I was able to capture this unique perspective in this remarkable photo. Presented as an 8" x 12" print for just $20. Additional sizes are available. Please contact me with any questions or special requests.
