Pre-order volume 1 of my graphic novel, Incomplete. it started as a piece of fiction, before developing into a webcomic and now a physical book.

I’ve been working on this for over two years, writing and drawing everything myself.

I got help editing the final work for printing, and am finally able to make it available for you to read at home.

252 full colour pages, perfect bound, with a silk coated heavyweight cover.

NOTICE - with the coronavirus lockdown I am unsure of how quickly this will be done so I’ve given an estimate of 3 weeks to be on the generous side.

The story

Pip is an outwardly cheerful, inwardly insecure, teenager. He plays rugby, studies hard, and volunteers at the local hospital, all of which he does for the sake of applying to university.

While volunteering, he finds out Matthew, who he played a match against in the past, is in the spinal unit after an accident. He goes to visit, and their friendship begins, before developing into one of mutual respect and admiration.

The project

When I was 18, I met a man with a spinal injury. It didn’t take long to fall in love with him, but I had no idea what to do about it. Eventually we got married, and it’s our story which provides the basis for Pip and Matt’s.

Stories about disability are becoming more frequent and the tone is changing; they’re becoming less tragic, more person focused, and it’s about time! Although I am not disabled, I am not writing it from Matthew’s point of view. Everything is seen through Pip’s eyes, and I asked my husband to tell me of his experiences to make it as authentic as possible.

I wanted to create something which could help people of many backgrounds and situations; gay teenagers, disabled teenagers, newly injured spinal patients, able bodied people hoping to gain better understanding, and hopefully one day a teenager wondering how to approach a relationship with another teenager who happens to be disabled.

I have seventeen chapters written, all of them on Tapas (a platform for reading webcomics), and I have over a hundred regular readers. People really appreciate the diversity of characters, as well as the love story growing between the two lead characters.

Why print a book if it’s already a webcomic?

Many people have told me they’re interested in what I’m doing, but they don’t like reading on a screen, or they don’t know how to find webcomics, or they just want to binge it when it’s all available. I’ve been asked when I’m going to print it since I started drawing it, and I’ve always wanted to see a physical copy, so I can’t wait to get going on making it!

Why ‘Incomplete’?

The comic’s name refers to a few different aspects of the story; firstly, and most obviously, Pip and Matt complete each other in their relationship.

Secondly, the story will never be ‘complete’ because I will write it as long as I can and continue to base it on our life.

Thirdly, and the reason I chose the word, is that an incomplete injury is a type of spinal injury where the spinal column is not completely severed, and some feeling remains below the level of injury.
