What inspired us to make our sculptured loons is one of our most favorite sights when at the lake - a loon floating on the water with it's baby snuggled on it's back. Seeing the loons and listening to their call always leaves us with a peaceful, calm feeling.
Our sculptured loon is hand cut from 16 gauge metal. It is 22" long from the tip of its beak to its tail &13 1/2" tall, and is welded to a flat metal base. After hand cutting, welding and rusting the loon, we brush it with a coat of polyurethane finish which gives it a more sophisticated two-tone brownish/black look. With this coat on, the rust will not rub off and the loon is safe for either indoor or outdoor decorating. ( The first 3 pictures show the loon after applying the polyurethane finish, the last 2 pictures of this loon are before the polyurethane coating is applied.)
Here's some interesting information about loons:
Loons make their nests along the shores of the lakes so that they can easily move into the water if they are threatened by predators. They usually lay two eggs a year. Loons are excellent divers and can fly at speeds up to 75 miles per hour but they cannot walk. They move on land with difficulty by pushing their bodies forward.
