Art deco operculum necklace set in tortoiseshell. Also known as cat's eye, operculum is the closure of a pacific turban shell. Used in jewelry in Victorian times, and thought then to ward off the evil eye. Later, during WWII, sailors collected them for good luck, made necklaces of these "protective eyes" for their lovers to wear while they were at sea. This piece most likely dates from the 30s, with its unusually thick, chunky, deco inspired plaques, and stepped graduation. In good condition with some surface chips, visible in photos, and a variegated patina to the chain. See below for a link to the matching bracelet.

chain is 18 inches in length, center panel is 1 inch tall.
chain is 46cm long, center panel is 25 mm tall.
