"The Maasai" is an original watercolor by renowned national artist Tom McKinney.

Tom McKinney is an illustrator, designer and prolific gauche watercolorist. As a well known portrait artist, he studied at the John Hussian School of Art and at the Philadelphia College of Art.

McKinney paints that which he loves in life, images from the black community, and painting in the spirit of the lives he has touched. He expresses in his portraits an understanding of his varied subjects. His attention encompasses his portrayal of many of the old jazz greats... such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane. His gentle portrayals of neighborhood people and especially the elderly have a similar poignancy, compassion, warmth and familiarity.

As the owner of The FrameDesign Gallery in downtown Cleveland, Ohio from the mid 70's thru the late 90's, I sold his prints, limited edition's and originals thru my gallery during that period. I also held several successful "One Man Shows" for Tom where his work was advertised and promoted throughout downtown Cleveland. This framed piece is one of many original watercolors and gauche originals that were representative of the body of work that I proudly carried with his name on it.

I purchased this original from the artist during one of his showings at my gallery in the early 1990's. It has remained in my personal collection throughout the decades. It is magnificently framed with a triple mat of archival materials and conservation glass. The original watercolor is on watercolor board and is backed by acid free foam core. The frame is a richly deep roped walnut wood and magnificently sets off the brilliance of the artwork.

Image size is roughly 16x20. Matted size is approx. 22x25 and the finished framed size is 25x28.

All materials used in the framing process are archival products commonly used in conservation framing. Acid free foam core is used as a backing behind the rag mats. All hanging materials necessary to mount on most wall surfaces are included.

This artwork should never be hung in direct sunlight and will do best if hung on an inner wall that does not expand and contract with temperature changes throughout the day.
