This renaissance heavy gilt brooch is hand forged and has all the hallmarks as well as his signature. It has a most unusual mythical creature on one side with a crown on its head ( I think it is a lion of some sort) and a unicorn on the other side. Between them is a key hole with a fleur de lis on the top and bottom. This is a hand crafted metal brooch that is 2 1/4“ tall and in very nice condition.

Max Rieg (1899-1985) was born in Germany and was trained as a metalworker. As a journeyman in Weimar, he attended classes at the Bauhaus. After immigrating to the United States in 1928, he worked briefly for Towle. In 1930, Rieg moved to New York City. He retired in the early 1950s.

This piece was likely made sometime between 1937 and 1952.
