Mixed metals are combined with beautiful lampwork beads and lampwork head pins to create an eclectic pair of earrings. The lampwork was made by my talented Aunt Sheila at StoneDesignsBySheila.etsy.com

At the top of the earrings are copper rings that I hammered for texture, then oxidized for an antique look, and finally polished to show the antiquing. I also hand forged the curlicues that encase the lampwork head pins. The antique copper and antique brass metals compliment each other well, and are harmonious with the many shades of pink in the lampwork and Swarovski crystal beads. There is lots of swing, sway and playful movement to these earrings, and they are very lightweight. The earrings measure 4 3/4" long, and will arrive packaged beautifully for giving.

Thank you for stopping by!

A little bit about lampwork beads and why they are so special...

Lampwork Beads are handmade glass beads. These special beads are crafted using a centuries-old process called lampworking. Rods of colorful glass are melted in a special torch and the molten glass is then wound around a steel rod, forming a basic bead. The hot bead can then be embellished using a variety of techniques and materials, creating unique and one-of-a-kind beads.

The term "lampwork" refers to the source used to heat the glass. In the old days oil lamps were used as the heat source, thus the term "lampwork".

To prevent stress and cracks, beads are cooled in a kiln, where temperatures can be closely regulated. The beadmaker "soaks" the beads at a high temperature to make sure that all glass within them is evenly heated, then takes several hours to slowly reduce the heat to bring beads to room temperature. The process is called kiln annealing. Annealing makes the beads strong and durable.
