1930s atomic Art Deco vintage Gravy Boat Pitcher: aerodynamic Salem Streamline shape, Zephyr Platinum pattern, creamy white with crisp architectural moderne streamlines in luscious silvery platinum, which slightly postdates Salem China's more familiar Mandarin Orange pattern.

Gravy boat pitcher was most likely designed by Herbert Smith & Vincent Broomhall (who patented its cousin, the similarly shaped cream pitcher, in 1935), this fabulous piece features 1 thick and 3 slim streamlined rings in silvery platinum, plus an angular handle and spout just dripping in platinum...de luxe!

Would go well with several of the Salem Zephyr Platinum pieces in our collection, see our Atomic Salem China section for more details:

:: Condition, Measurements ::

Gravy boat measures 8" from spout to handle [20.3cm] and stands 2.75" high [7cm].

Condition is Excellent – faint crazing as expected for this age, and some 'wavering' to the platinum, probably from exposure to a strong detergent; otherwise, no cracks, chips or repairs.

Maker’s mark reads “STREAMLINE By SALEM” in platinum ink.

:: Salem Zephyr Design ::

Many of the early 20th century Ohio potteries experimented with decorating the local clays with precious metals, but Salem China excelled at this with their Zephyr dinnerware pattern: bright creamy white ceramic pieces with a glossy finish, trimmed with either 23 karat gold or their "warranted" meld of platinum & 23k gold. The latter produced a glittery, silver mercury-colored metallic glaze that rarely tarnished (unlike the turn-of-the-century glazes that used actual silver). The resulting product was both luxurious and affordable, perfect for the post-Depression marketplace.

Zephyr’s design also joined the rebellion against the Victorian Era's addiction to clutter and flounce; its thin, precise lines were a perfect example of the streamlined quality of Art Deco’s ‘Machine Age’ aesthetic. But, when they threw restraint to the winds and decided their knobs and handles (as well as their Coffeepots’ & Creamers’ spouts, etc.) should be not only trimmed, but actually drenched in thick, rich, glittering platinum, moderation be damned, we’re talking about some serious retro bling here!

The Zephyr pattern was present on these (& possibly more) Salem China shapes:

~ Tricorne
~ Streamline
~ Century
~ Saphire

:: Care & Handling ::

As with any china with metallic embellishment, these should not be used in microwaves, and I strongly recommend hand washing. Where there is surface crazing, avoid staining by restricting contact with acidic or deeply colored liquids & foods (strong coffee, beets, etc).

PLEASE NOTE: Vintage and antique dinnerware were often decorated with glazes containing varying degrees of toxic substances, like lead or cadmium. If you have a concern, please research before purchasing. To minimize exposure to these substances when using vintage dinnerware, please observe the following precautions: use infrequently; do not expose to high heat, including microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers; avoid contact with acidic foods & liquids, especially if cracked or crazed (slight crackling of the clear overglaze); do not use to store food or liquids; wash by hand soon after use and allow to air dry.
