CONDITION: signs of use and wear are to be expected on pre-owned items; good vintage condition.

SIZE: comb 3½ x 2 ins (9 x 5 cms) barrette 3½ x 1½ ins (9 x 4 cms)

DATE: 1980s

DESCRIPTION:

This lovely suite comprises two matching hair combs and a barrette. They are all made in the same gold fancy metallic finish and covered with large and small shiny beads.

Located in NY city the opulent creations of David Salvatore are sparkling with faux pearls and gems. Salvators high end accessories are frequesntly featured in the pages of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and other fashion magazines. His aim is to take couture designs straight off the runway rather than scaling them down for the public. While the designs often appear large and heavy they are well designed and much lighter and easier to wear than they appear.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The costume jewellery industry flourished in the 1980s, and women experienced a new freedom and confidence to wear frankly fake fashion jewellery. This was boosted by the glitz and glamour of TV soaps such as Dallas and Dynasty where jewelry could not be too big or bold. The fashion hallmarks of the decade were big shoulders, big hair and co-ordinating costume jewellery. Hair was teased and ratted out, and this ‘big’ hair cried out to be balanced by glitzy jewellery in gilt settings with huge fake looking stones. Hair accessories of the period were certainly neither small nor delicate and tended to be very much over the top!
