This is a really unusual old Victorian swivel fob, c.1880s in date. It's in goldtone metal- probably gold filled or some kind of pinchbeck- nice quality, but it's unmarked. One side of the swivel fob is set with a piece of white agate (also called 'Greek agate' as it was used by the ancient Greeks). In the center of the white agate is a little shield-shaped cartouche with an engraved pattern. The agate has a few flea-bite chips- nothing very noticeable- and the cartouche has discolored in the center where it has been rubbed. The other side of the fob is gold with an engraved flower pattern and a plain band across the center (a little rubbed again). It's not immediately obvious but the gold is a door, with a hinge one side and a catch the other, which opens the locket. I don't think the locket has ever been used as it still has bright blue fabric lining and its original glass and metal frames!

The fob swivels on a surved metal arm which is simply decorated with metal ball studs (one missing), and has a twisted metal bail at the top. A really elegant and unusual piece in very good condition for its age! Approx. 3.5cm top-to -bottom including the bail, and 3cm wide.
