The latest box of Grandma's items that I went through held these WWII Ration tokens. They are Red OPA Coins. OPA stands for Office of Price Administration. Rationing first began in 1942, using coins, stamps, and chits. The ration coins were issued in 1944. They were discontinued in 1945, so were not used for very long. Items rationed were food (canned goods, meats, sugar, coffee), tires, gas, and more. The red tokens were used for meats and fats. (Double click on each photo for a close-up view!)

The stamped letters on the coins are unexplained in the places I've researched them, but there are many letter combinations on the coins. Some letter combinations are more valuable than others. Red letter combinations known. HC, HT, MV, MM, TH, TY, UC, UH, UT, UV, UX, UY, VC, VH, VT, VU, VX, VY, XC, XH, XT, XU, XV, XY, YC, YH, YT, YU, YV, YX.

The rarest is the red MV. The next rarest are the red MM. Error OPAs are worth more.

Each coin is made of vulacanized fiber (celluloid) and is 16mm in size.

Red tokens read: OPA Red Point 1 (with two different letters)

This listing is for 93 Red tokens, as shown here. There is one MM Red token and one misprint. (if you double-click on each of my photos you can see the enlarged view. One photo shows the MM Token, as well as the misprint that shows the stamp is not centered on the coin). The rest of the tokens are various letter combinations. Most are in good condition, but some of them show age and wear and a few have something black or white on them. I assume they got this from use being in pockets and coin purses with other currency and coins during the time they were used.

Grandma kept everything and I can't enjoy it all myself, so I'll share it with you on GreenGablesLane. Check out all the rest of my items from Grandma's house and the one room school house at: GreenGablesLane.etsy.com
