Antique Agriculture of Massachusetts book, 1892. HC family journal, heavily distressed vintage objet d'art shabby cottage paris apartment decor.

Not for the faint of heart! Extremely distressed but bursting with vintage charm and character!

This book is over 120 years old and looks every bit of it. So much more than just an old book, it is a piece of history, the tangible heart & soul of a family. Once you open its heavily aged cover, you will discover so much more than just agricultural facts.

Throughout the book are glimpses of years gone by...

The inside front cover features a handwritten 'gratitude' offering if you will.... An excerpt, including misspellings "The sky is grey with clouds but our harts are full of for pleseant homes and tender frinds (etc.) Some of it is hard to make out, but it ends with, "kindly deeds and gentle words shall make the whole day bright."

There are school lessons throughout the book, simple arithmetic and addition problems, music lessons, penmanship, artwork, etc. I'm sure in those days paper was hard to come by, and it's clear that the margins and blank pages within this book provided the work space needed for the day's lessons.

Although I didn't include it in the sample pages in the photographs above, one of my favorite pages were the pencil drawings of caterpillars and moths in the Gypsy Moth chapter.

A younger sibling offered their own talent in the form of free form crayon scribbles on some of the pages.

I don't understand how books as personal as these end up in a used bookstore. How I would love to have something like this from my own family, dating back to my grandparents or great grandparents time!

So there you have it. A book that has seen hard times yet still has so much to offer. Far from pristine. Pages have been written on, some even clipped. While the binding is still holding pages intact (for now at least!), the front cover and spine are completely separated from the book, although they are still attached to the back cover which in turn is attached to the book.

Now, with all the imperfections I have pointed out, the fact is, this book could still be read and enjoyed for agricultural information contained within dating back to the last century.

It would also make a gorgeous 'base' for a small vignette... perhaps add a picture and plant to the top or whatnot. A beautiful objet d'art display piece!
