On a walk in our woods this spring I came across an American Hornbeam (or Musclewood) tree that had died last year. I came back with a hand saw and cut several pieces to make into spoons and spatulas. It was a 6" diameter tree that had been choked by honeysuckle, which gave it a twisted bulging growth pattern which is yielding really interesting grain. Hornbeam is super dense and hard with tight grain - perfect for spoons, and was used by the American pioneers for tools, bowls, and utensils. The trees are slow growing and relatively small, so the wood is very rare and not found commercially.

This lovely little spoon and knife set is part of a limited number of pieces I've carved out of this beautiful blond hardwood. The wood has some lovely darker streaks and ripples that contrast the creamy scalloped grain. Our paté knives are perfect for spreads such as humus, olive tapenade, soft cheeses and of course, patés. The petite tapenade spoon is wonderful for dips, relish trays, and other hors d'oeuvres. The spoon measures 5 7/8 inch long and the knife is 7 inches long.

We include a gift-quality tag with care instructions with every utensil.

• All wood we use comes from sustainable, natural, locally harvested sources, and most is recycled from larger furniture making operations.
• We employ ecologically sound crafting practices.
• All pieces are polished to a high shine and finished with natural food grade olive oil.
• Engineered for strength and durability
• Safe for most non-stick cookware
