I am in love with indigo vat dyeing. Picking up a book about natural dyeing methods did not satisfy my craving either. It used large quantities of Spectralite which I wasn't very fond of and left the wool very crispy. This time I picked up on an older method using lye and fermenting the vat, that will allow me to keep it for years to come. So this is it, as natural as I'm willing to go (stale urine is one method I WILL NOT use!)

So this listing is for ONE hank (two available - see second picture) of three-ply sock yarn that could be used as a fingering weight yarn in any pattern - socks, hats, mittens, gloves, etc. VERY SOFT! Next to the skin so. It started out as raw wool that I washed and flick-carded, then spun on my antique spinning wheel.

Because indigo is fermented leaves that have been fermented again in a vat, it has a distinct odor that lingers lightly in the yarn. Personally, I don't find it unpleasant, just distinctive. Also, though the yarn has been washed in three fresh baths, it could still bleed out a little. Indigo is like that.

Please note that because of the subtle nature of the color, it is difficult to photograph and that all monitors display differently.
