Okra is a versatile, mostly southern, vegetable that can be boiled, pickled, fried, stewed with tomatoes, used in gumbo, soup, as a seasoning for beans and on and on and on. I, however am of the opinion that if it is not fried or used as a seasoning and immediately discarded, the only thing to do with it is dry it out completely and use it for craft projects.

My introduction to okra ornaments came at a craft show over 25 years ago when I purchased my first okra Santa Claus. It has hung on my tree every Christmas since. That's what I call getting your money's worth.

When I changed my work status from full time to part time it allowed me the opportunity to let my creative side sneak out of it's hidey hole. I couldn't wait to get my hands on some okra. Friday's Girl, as I dubbed my crafty endeavor, started out making Santas and angels. I would take them to work for "show and tell' and my buddies there shared my enthusiasm. One day I took an angel with way too much funky hair and blue eye shadow who somehow didn't look very angelic. My boss looked at her and said, "Debbie, that is no angel, she is a H'Okra (TM). At that point H'Okra and Gumbo Pot Creations (TM) were born. We now make Alabama and Auburn H'Okra, Mardi Gras H'Okra, Santas, angels and critters. Critters happen when the okra dries out bent over, with an open "mouth" and you just can't do anything else with it.

Each okra pod is dried, hand painted and decorated. The shape of the pod determines what it will become. The Santas have wire rimmed glasses sized for each individual Santa. The "girls" wear feather boas and Swarovski crystal necklaces. They all have ribbons for hanging.

We are glad to make special orders for your team or to resemble a friend. Just let me know the details.

Mardi Gras H'Okra #2 is 5" from the top of her hat to the hem of her dress.
