Specifics on this piece: This wallet is from Afghanistan, made by the Pashtun Tribe, the largest ethnic minority of the country. This is an oldie! Embroidered with metallic threads that have worn away in many places, the inside shows best what a beauty this once was. There are two pockets on the inside which would be used to hold jewelry or money. One button is left on the top, part of the original closure. The piece is heavy and thick, almost carpet weight. The stories it could tell!

Afghanistan has been at the heart of the crossroads for the Silk Road for centuries. Nomads and generations of ethnic groups have thrived on trade and beautiful handicraft skills. Textiles, embroidery and carpet weaving continue to represent a plethora of skills that extend on into metal work, wood work, and ceramics. Designs reflect both the beauty of nature and life of spirit in choice of colors and fluidity of the design.
