At a garage sale a few years ago, we came across these amazing things that looked like a pair of chrome foghorns. We thought they would make fantastic lamps.

They're actually called Cowl Vents, which allow air to circulate into the rooms below deck on a ship. They're made of beautifully formed chrome-plated sheet metal, with a powder-coated white interior. The vent is a little dented up, with one jumbo dent on the top right side, which gives it great character (we think). It also has a light patina of corrosion, but if you want it shiny, it should buff out nicely. The vent threads into a heavy cast metal deck plate that's also chromed. It's mounted on a box pedestal made of salvaged wood. The gloss red enameled sides were originally braces on an old bingo table. The top is 3/4" pine that was reclaimed from the renovation of an 1860's era building. It is stained a deep walnut brown, with a light coat of tung oil. The ceramic light socket is also vintage, with new wiring and toggle switch that's mounted on a handmade plate of vintage brass sheeting. As a finishing touch, the deck plates are fastened to the wooden boxes with the same red-painted screws that were removed from the old bingo table.

The vent can be rotated to face any direction, to cast a soft light into the room or bounce it off the wall. The 15 watt bulb is down inside the neck of the vent, so it's not glaring to look at. It makes a beautiful low-level light, great for a media room, bedroom, or for a party where you don't want the lights too bright. Item #1107021
