The time of the Great Upheaval was so long ago now that nobody had more than a vague, blurry, second hand memory of it. The stories of Before, before the world as they knew it now seemed like impossible fairy tales. The sort of fairy tale where the wicked witch wins in the end, where the Princess is never saved and the good folk are left to suffer at the hands of nasty ogres.
Russel knew the stories, mostly. He knew that before the Great Upheaval mushroom folk were different then. His great, great, great grandmother said they were hardly folk at all. Rather quiet, dull, pale versions of the creatures they were today. The worst part of the old stories though was that all of mushroom and mushroom kind, even the toad stools, had been permanently attached to the ground.
Russel shuddered, this was the part of the story when the young fungi would huddle closer, their brightly colored caps bumping together, dark eyes wide with the combination of delicious glee and fright that comes from the telling a scary story.
Russel remembered the first time he'd been told of it, the time before the Great Upheaval, he'd thought it a grand joke. But the same story wove it's way through the fabric of the mushroom's history like a great dark thread that could not be unraveled. It HAD been that way. Mushrooms had been unable to walk, just stuck forever in the same lump of moss they'd grown.....
Russel leapt nimbly over a craggy stone that marred the otherwise perfect carpet of moss. The horror of it. Unable to hop? To skip and jump and run amongst the trees?
How did mushrooms play hide and go seek? How did they manage to survive with what must have been incredible boredom, unable to move, no feet, no legs....
He shuddered again, a great shiver that shook him from the tips of his muddy feet to the top of his shimmery red cap.
The urge to run fast struck him, no more tip toeing, no more walking, he wanted to run away from the history of his kind. Shake off the dredges of fear and sadness of the world before the Great Upheaval. He wanted to celebrate the luxury of life as it was now, where mushrooms of all kinds could roam freely through the woods.
He began sprinting, one leg in front of the other, faster and faster, a pale blur topped with a glittering red cap that streaked through the underbrush. It was pure joy, it was the perfect celebration of the strange magic that had uprooted his mushroom ancestors, showing them their ability to move...or giving it to them...no one knew.
Russel sped up, the light that trickled through the dense branches over head sparkled like brilliant gold beams, he dashed through each one. Letting the heat touch him for just an instant, then his feet hit the spongey cool moss, the shadows enveloped him once more until the next patch of sunlight.
Russel and his fungi kin might not have remembered all the details of Before, but they appreciated the quality of life of the now. To dance and skip, to jump and leap, to bury one's self deep in soft embracing moss for a nap only to hop out again when the mood struck. The choice, it was always a choice, was the most beautiful gift of the Great Upheaval.
Russel slowed his run, seamlessly moving from a jog to a twirling dance amongst the ferns. His eyes shone bright, happiness yes and maybe a tear...not just from the wind from a mad dash through the forest. But happiness.
