Selkies....the shapeshifting creatures in Celtic folklore, seals in the sea, women on land. The legend is that she can find true love, and if he hides her seal skin she will remain on land, happy with her husband, yet always longing for the sea. If she finds her seal skin, she will immediately put it on and return to the sea. The gourd is titled Selkie Swim, selkies in their seal form swimming in the ocean. Some looking up out the water, perhaps at the life left behind on land...

The gourd itself is pyroengraved (woodburned) by hand directly on the gourd, with dyed pine needles on the rim. Color is added on the borders with oil paints and metallic pigments, giving it an almost raku appearance.

This, as is all of my work, is an original piece of art. Each gourd is hand done, one at a time. The bowl is not meant for liquids or food.

Gourds are a product of nature; this particular is a hardshell gourd. Check out the last picture- that is what a hardshell gourd looks like when it is growing on the vine. Once dried (takes 6-12 months to dry completely) they will turn brown and will look, feel and last for as long as any piece of wood.

Approx. 5" tall x 6.25" diameter (wide)

Signed.
