This is an actual double-spread, 2-page illustration removed from the vintage first edition of the 1949 cookbook, "The Fireside Cook Book" by James Beard (the book itself had lost its spine and was too damaged to be sold intact). Illustration by Alice and Martin Provensen.

Condition issues: Distinct crease down the middle, the center fold of the page. Tiny holes along crease from where pages were sewn in binding. Small stains in several places (see top of girl's hat for example). Moderate age-tanning to paper.

Please note: Image 1 here shows a detail (and more accurate color); Image 2 shows entire double-page spread.

Size: Page is approximately 14-3/4 x 9-7/8 inches. The reverse is text and some small illustrations.

Lively, colorful illustration shows a pretty country girl holding a large black rooster, against a background of farmyard, barn, and lots of chickens being chased by a farmer. Text reads: "A bird in the hand... chicken today, feathers tomorrow".

The noted American author-illustrator team of Alice and Martin Provensen created more than 50 children's books, among other projects, and were twice awarded the Caldecott Medal. Martin designed Kellogg's Tony the Tiger character.

"The Fireside Cook Book" is chock-full of the Provensens' witty artwork, and is a really nice general cookbook (1,217 recipes!) with 1940s flair. It's worth seeking out a good used copy. This copy wasn't good, but I couldn't let such fine pictures go to waste.

This handsome page of vintage illustration and culinary history would look wonderful framed. Unique gift for enthusiastic urban chicken farmers or lovers of rustic country style!
