Royal Doulton's creative director, Charles Noke, was in his seventies when he introduced character jugs in 1933. In 1939 he adapted his characters into a collection of gifts known as derivatives, which include musical jugs, tobacco jars, sugar bowls, toothpick holders and teapots.
