This natural bone cabochon shows the Lord Buddha seated with his right hand in the ritualised pose known as the Akash mudra.

As in Buddhist art and sculpture, it's common for artisan-carved jewelry pieces to depict Buddha with his hands forming one of the many mudras, a type of sign language to the devout.

In this piece, beautifully crafted in Bali, his left hand rests in his lap, palm upward, in the Dhyana mudra of meditation.

His right hand is making the Akash gesture with the thumb and index finger pressed together, with the remaining fingers outstretched.

The mudras are important in Hindu and Buddhist iconography and also have significance in yoga and natural healing.

You'll even find them in Balinese dance if you study the hands of a legong or other dancer next time you're watching a cultural performance.

The thumb and fingers represent the five elements. The thumb represents fire, and the middle finger represents akash, the space, sky or ether element.

The Akash is said to increase the space inside you and is considered a detoxifying mudra, enhancing the elimination of metabolic waste from the body.

It's also capable of erasing angry or uncharitable thoughts. Try it next time you're sitting in a traffic jam. Regular practice is said to calm and clarify the thought process.

Buddhism has been synthesized into local Balinese culture, and is a major feature of the artistic traditions of this last Hindu outpost in Indonesia.

Wander through one of the lush tropical gardens that abound in the hotels and restaurants of this island paradise and you are as likely to come across a beautiful Buddha carved out of the local soft volcanic paras stone as you are any Hindu god.

The Sanskrit term 'mudra' derives from the verb mud, meaning “to please (the gods)”.
