This beautiful embroidered coif is made entirely by hand. There is no machine stitching on it anywhere. The base fabric is white linen, and the embroidery is completed in varying thickness of DMC Cotton Floss and pearl cotton. The embroidery is accented with a large amount of silver boullion, worked into the stems and the centers of the flowers, and along the tendrels. There are also delicate silver spangles scattered on the ground fabric. The lace on the front edge is a modern machine made lace, and the ribbon ties as a plain satin poly ribbon.
The design style of the embroidery is consistant with existing coifs and painted representations of period embroidered items, the stitches used were commonly used in the years 1580-1600. A careful study of Elizabethan embroideries lead to the choice of the design motifs. The silver boullion and spangles, add a lively sparkle, which is especially appearant in candlelight.
The coif is constructed according to one of the patterns in Janet Arnold's "Patterns of fashion - 4" which details linens and personal wearing appearal that exists today, and while it is not a copy of any existing coif, is a good recreation of a standard Elizabethan coif.
Because this coif is worked entirely by hand, many hours were required to make it, and the best quality materials are used.
An instruction sheet detailing wearing instructions, cleaning and care will be included.
