I created these earrings using Precious Metal Clay and wings collected from a naturally expired cicada. The process is intensive and time consuming due to their delicacy, and the original wings burn away in my kiln, but a detailed fine silver version remains.
The Myth of the Cicadas:
When the Muses were born and song appeared, there were men who became so overwhelmed with enchantment that they forgot to eat and sleep. Their ecstasy cost them their human lives, but the Muses honored them with new life as cicadas, creatures who would need no food or sleep, but only to sing from life until death. It is the cicadas who watch humans and report to the Muses who honors them on earth.
