New Orleans the 1800s. Amethyst stones and rondelles, magnesite rounds, faceted garnet and intricately carved wood beads hold sterling silver charms chosen to paint a beaded portrait of Marie Laveau b. September 10, 1801; d. June 16, 1881??

Most everything known about Marie Laveau is supposition. She was born in New Orleans (or Saint Domingue). She was a multi-racial, multi-cultural free woman of color; a Creole and a devout Catholic. Sometime in the 1820's she quit her day job as a (a)hairdresser (b)liquor importer (c) whorehouse madam (d) all of the above, and became a professional voodoo practitioner, making a damn good living at it.
The only certain thing is that she is the most famous voodoo queen in U.S.history. Thousands of people visit her mausoleum every year.
(Up for question, too, is who is actually buried there.)

The necklace is 23"(58.42cm). The focal assemblage of wood, vintage bronze and coral is a little over 4" ( 11cm) The back is vintage turquoise Japanese glass beads and the "S" clasp and cones are sterling silver. This one of a kind necklace will be shipped USPS with insurance and domestic tracking included in the shipping price. I do use signature confirmation for shipments over $100.
