This unique little bowl or candy dish was cut on the scroll saw from an unusual species of wood, known as Monkeypod. Also called a Raintree or Saman tree, found in the Pacific Islands. This particular stock is Hawaiin. The enormous crown makes this tree one of the greatest shade trees on the planet. The bowl, which measures 5 1/2 inches round is surprisingly light, but this wood is amazingly tough and durable nevertheless. The beautiful bands in the grain pattern were a delightful surprise to me as well as the amazing colours. This method of construction, which starts out with a flat piece of square wood cut into concentric rings becomes a real journey often yielding unexpected results. It is always a pleasure when you work with wood the first time and the results are so positive
