RESERVED FOR MONICA first of two pendants

Mahina pendant:
1. Large 14mm x 12mm nucleated baroque Kasumi type starlight white freshwater drop pearl solitaire pendant set in solid 14kt gold - not plated.

The "pearl enhancer" bail is in two tones -14kt white and yellow gold - solid, not plated. Pearl enhancer bails allow you to wear the pendant with a pearl or beaded necklace, as well as with a chain. The back of the bail opens to allow you to place the pendant between two pearls or beads on your necklace to "dress it up". The pearls or beads need not be of the same color for this to work well. The closure on the bail snaps shut and is quite secure, so no need to worry about losing your pendant.

This pearl most closely resembles what are known as Japanese Kasumi pearls, which are still produced in very small quantities and are exceptionally rare. While this pearl is a Chinese nucleated freshwater pearl, it is identical in character to a Kasumi pearl. The Chinese seem to have matched the Japanese for quality in cultivation and apparently use the same sort of bivalve to make this type of pearl. As far as I can tell Kasumi pearls generally run between $125.00 to $150.00 (or more) per pearl wholesale and unset! Pearl nomenclature is a bit fluid, but I am calling this a "Kasumi type pearl" due to its origin - just so there is no confusion.

Nucleated pearls typically show folds, dimples, ripples and voids. These are not considered flaws, but are sought after for their visual interest and the color play that results. I have rated this one AAA for its incredible luster, rarity, visual and tactile interest, and character.

AAA grade; natural silvery white color - not bleached; Kasumi type textured skin; very high luster; really nice drop shape; with a rainbow of overtones. This pearl is considered flawless.

28mm or about 1 1/8" in overall length. That's about the equivalent 1 1/2 US pennies put together.

3g or .11oz in weight. A US penny weighs .08oz on average.
