The serial production of the Soviet FED camera started in 1934 at a plant in a children labor commune in the city of Kharkov. The FED camera was named after F.E.Dzerzhinskiy, a famous Russian NKVD-KGB founder. Before the Second World War, approximately 160,650 FED cameras were produced, replicating the German Leica II.

During the war the plant ceased operations and did not start up again until 1948. Then in 1955, the plant began producing the FED-2, an improved model of the FED camera.

The main difference between the FED-2 and the FED is the FED-2's wide base rangefinder coupled with a viewfinder, dioptric adjustment of the viewfinder and removable back cover. This camera is perfect for collecting .
