~~~ Elk Bugling ~~~
Elk medicine teaches us that by pacing ourselves we increase our stamina. Elk people may not complete a project first, but when it is done they have not burned themselves out. Elk are able to look at the long journey and to "hit their stride" to maintain energy and perseverance.
Animal spirit Elk reminds us of the importance of community, most especially fellowship with our same gender. Herds of elk are normally female or male and only unite during mating season. We are reminded by Elk that there is always support if we need it.
This is a phenomenal bag! ELK is honored throughout this bag, with her offering of bone
and antler.
Made of butter soft smoke colored deerskin. The front is accented with the natural edge of the hide in 2 colors: red deerskin (true red, not "tomato soup" like in the pictures!) and a buffed dark brown goatskin. All hand stitched using Spanish Edge lacing.
The focal point is a gorgeous 1 5/8" X 1 1/8" Elk antler button, inlaid with Kingman turquoise. The edge of the red hide holds tiny Chinese turquoise heishi. 2 strands of old and new beads also adorn the front of the bag. The strands include seed beads, various sizes and shapes of Chinese turquoise, oyster shell heishi, several types of antique (mid - late 1800s) Venetian striped trade beads, including rare gray hearts. The ends are pieces of Elk rib bone. Double drawstrings to for closure that hold additional Elk rib bone (thicker cut) as the slide beads. NOTE...I have cut, sanded and buffed all antler and bone myself.
The bag measures 5 3/4" across X 7 1/2" long. The inside measurements are 5 1/4" across X
6 1/2" long. The braided strap is 56" and can easily be worn cross shoulder. The strap has been sewn onto the bag and the ends create a little fringe on each side of the bag. The ends hold tin jingle cones. Signed and dated by the artist.
