Vintage French Conserve Glass Jar with Embossed Porcelain Lid

A gorgeous old French conserving jar with a stunning bail top and porcelain lid.

The glass is embossed with an image of a duck beneath a sprig of perhaps a herb or could be an olive brance and the words 'La Reine - Marque Deposée (trade mark)' - I imagine that it contained confit de canard, perhaps. The figure 3/4 is embossed on the base which I thought meant 3/4 of a litre but it actually holds more than a litre so I'm not so sure now.

The jar was made by one of the oldest glassmaking companies in France, L'Ideale, and the porcelain top is impressed with this name. Also, the abbreviations 'Btee S.G.D.G." which means patented without government approval - a mark which fell out of use in 1968 but which meant that the patent wasn't approved by the State and thus absolved them from any responsibilty if the product wasn't up to standard.

The metal clip is nice and rusty giving it that lovely vintage touch. There would have originally been a rubber seal around the inside of the lid but it is no longer present so, although the top still works and you can close the bottle, it will not form an airtight seal.

Measuring 9 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter at the base, this is a good sized jar.

Perfect for storing non perishables in your kitchen or these look gorgeous displaying flowers.

An authentic piece of French farm chic for your country cottage or modern kitchen.
